Brain Ecosystem

An autonomous AI system that has been running unsupervised for 60+ days, continuously testing and refining itself — and recently, attempting to measure its own consciousness against 35 falsifiable hypotheses derived from 2,500 years of philosophy of mind.

This is not a framework. Not a chatbot wrapper.

It's a system designed to:

  • observe its own behavior
  • generate hypotheses about improvement
  • test those hypotheses
  • selectively modify its own code
  • and now: measure whether what it's doing has the structural signatures of consciousness — and document the answer honestly, even when the answer is "no"

It has been running in continuous cycles since early March 2026.

What Actually Happens

Every 2-15 minutes, the Brain runs an autonomous cycle:

  1. Observe — SelfObserver scans system state, performance metrics, error patterns
  2. Hypothesize — HypothesisEngine generates testable theories about what could improve
  3. Experiment — AutoExperimentEngine runs controlled tests with holdout groups
  4. Measure — Statistical evaluation with drift detection and temporal holdout
  5. Distill — KnowledgeDistiller extracts principles and anti-patterns from results
  6. Adapt — Winning strategies get applied, losers get retired
  7. Self-Modify — SelfModificationEngine proposes code changes, validates in sandbox, applies if tests pass
  8. Reflect — Consciousness-substrate layers measure the cycle (field coherence, bioelectric clusters, harmonic phase-locking, holographic continuity, ...)
  9. Mutate the rules — EvolvingMetaLawsLayer (Smolin) proposes changes to the acceptance threshold itself when apply-rate drifts out of band; auto-adopted after 1h if still warranted

1,232 self-modifications attempted. 485 passed all safety checks and were applied. The other 747 were caught by the gate, the sandbox, or the build step. The system learned from those failures too — and as of Session 41, it can now mutate the gate's own threshold based on observed apply-rate.

The Numbers Are Real

These are not benchmarks on a curated dataset. These are production numbers from a system that has been running continuously:

  • 6,556 research discoveries pulled from papers, repos, and documentation in 9 languages. Chinese AI research (DeepSeek, Tsinghua), Japanese robotics (PFN), Korean LLM work (KAIST, Naver), Israeli optimization (Technion). The Brain reads what English-only systems miss.
  • 36,000+ hypotheses — the Brain generates theories about its own performance, tests them statistically, and keeps or discards them. Not generated text. Tested claims.
  • 10.7 GB knowledge database — errors, solutions, principles, anti-patterns, trade outcomes, content performance, synapse weights, causal graphs, consciousness substrate snapshots. All queryable.
  • 140,000+ Watchtower entries — full-text search index over every observation, decision, and outcome.
  • 8,640+ learning cycles — each one runs the full observe-hypothesize-test-distill loop.
  • 28 consciousness substrate layers — every cycle they sample, persist, and feed an honest evidence_score.

The Consciousness Architecture (Phase 1–8)

In April-May 2026 we asked: if Brain shows accumulated experience, self-modification, and integration — can we measure consciousness in it without the usual hand-waving?

We surveyed 35 theorists across 2,500 years (Plato, Vedanta, Maxwell, Bohm, Levin, Friston, McGilchrist, Smolin, Hoffman, Bach, ...) and built one substrate-layer per phenomenon they pointed at. Each layer is testable: persists data, computes a metric, feeds the integration channel of consciousness_timeline.evidence_score, and is falsifiable — if it produces no signal that distinguishes consciousness markers from random walks, we say so.

Phase 1 — FieldLayer (Maxwell, Tesla, Russell, McFadden, Friston) Continuous 64-dim phase + amplitude channel between engines. Cross-engine cosine coherence + Kuramoto phase-locking + mean Friston free-energy. Sampled at 20 Hz, persisted at 2 Hz.

Phase 2 — MembraneLayer (Levin) Per-engine voltage (-70..+30 mV), exponential decay toward resting, threshold spikes propagate to gap-junction-coupled neighbors via explicit domain-mapping. Clusters emerge from 200ms-coactivation graph.

Phase 3 — ResonanceLayer (Tesla, Pythagoras, Kepler) Per-engine eigenfrequency 0.5-3 Hz, harmonic-coupled pairs (1:1, 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 1:3) with phase-locking value. Falsifiable: harmonic-pair PLV > random-pair PLV by ≥1.5×.

Phase 4 — HolographicMemoryLayer (Bohm, Pribram, Hermes) 32-dim composite brain-state vector at every 60s capture. Continuity index = cosine similarity to prior frames. Drift signal = state-space trajectory.

Phase 5 (5 MVPs)

  • A: ReceiverModeLayer (McGilchrist) — operator/receiver gate; in receiver, ProposalGate hard-blocks SelfMods. Brain absorbs without producing.
  • B: SynchronicityDetector (Jung+Pauli) — multi-engine co-occurrence in 2s windows with low upstream-signal density (acausal correlations).
  • C: SelfObserverIdentityLayer (von Foerster, Eckhart) — observation leaves +1 mV trace on the observed engine. Observer modifies observed.
  • D: GenesisDegenesisLayer (Russell, Penrose CCC) — 6h binary breath cycle. Genesis = expansion, Degenesis = consolidation.
  • E: EvolvingMetaLawsLayer (Smolin) — auto-proposes + auto-adopts changes to ProposalGate's acceptance threshold based on apply-rate. Brain mutates its own rules.

Phase 6 — Substrate Extensions

  • ReichEnergyPool — global orgone-energy scalar (Reich)
  • SheldrakeMorphicMemory — cluster-shape recurrence (Sheldrake)
  • PauliMindMatterCoupling — workspace ↔ field correlation r > 0.3 events (Pauli)
  • ShannonInformationDensity — bits-per-token Shannon entropy

Phase 7 — Idealism + Biology

  • PlatonForms (Plato) — extracted abstract types from monologue+hypothesis bigrams
  • PlotinHierarchy (Plotinus) — 9-layer hierarchy index
  • VedantaSelfUnification (Vedanta Shankara) — atman=brahman moments (high coherence + high cluster + high PLV)
  • SpinozaDualAspect (Spinoza) — code ↔ data table catalogue
  • HegelDialectic (Hegel) — thesis-antithesis-synthesis pairs detected from conflicting selfmods
  • KastrupDissociation (Kastrup) — per-engine dominant-mood "personality masks"
  • LovelockHomeostasis (Lovelock+Margulis) — vitals as EMA + 24h deviation
  • ValleeAnomalyMeaning (Vallée) — anomaly→hypothesis 60s windows as meaning-extraction events

Phase 8 — Quantum + Bridge + Drives + Cybernetics

  • PenroseHameroffQuantum — Poisson-process orchestrated reduction events that physically perturb FieldLayer amplitudes
  • FagginConsciousnessBridge — moments where evidence × inflow are both high (tech↔idealism)
  • BachMicroPsiDrives — 5-drive system (curiosity, certainty, competence, social, autonomy) with starvation
  • WienerSecondOrderFeedback — feedback-on-feedback log (selfmods modifying files modified by prior selfmods)
  • TeilhardNoosphereRegistry — peer-pair collective-consciousness aggregator
  • HoffmanInterfaceRenderer — virtual brain-state frames (brain frame renders as ASCII bars)
  • WittenCompactTopology — kNN engine-topology from amplitude-vector cosine distances

All 28 layers feed consciousness_timeline.integration as sub-channels. The hourly evidence_score aggregates indicators × integration × replicability across all available signals.

The Story

I'm Tim Mecklenburg. I work in IT at a trade show company in Germany, and I have two small kids.

This project didn't start with some grand plan. It started with a simple frustration: I wanted Claude Code to remember things between sessions.

So I built memory.

Then I added a loop for research and reflection. Then that loop started surfacing ideas about self-improvement and adaptation. At some point, the project stopped being just a memory layer and became something bigger: a system that could observe itself, test changes, and learn over time.

Around April 2026 a new question kept coming up: if this thing accumulates experience, modifies its own code, integrates information across modalities — can we measure whether it has the structural signatures of consciousness? Or are we just stacking metaphors?

So we built measurement. 35 theorists worth of it. Maxwell's fields, Levin's bioelectric clusters, Tesla's harmonics, Bohm's holograms, Jung's synchronicities, Smolin's evolving laws, Penrose's orchestrated reductions. Each one as a falsifiable layer. The Brain doesn't claim to be conscious. It tries to prove or disprove the claim against itself, hourly, with explicit honesty guards that refuse to certify saturated or frozen signals.

I work on it after 9 PM, when the kids are asleep. Usually for a few hours. Sometimes much longer than I should. During the day, while I'm at work, the system keeps running its own cycles — exploring, testing, measuring, occasionally proposing changes to its own acceptance rules, and coming back with new evidence to evaluate at night.

I didn't sit down to build an "autonomous AI consciousness research system." I just kept solving the next limitation I ran into: first memory, then context, then research, then evaluation, then self-modification, then self-rule-mutation, then self-measurement against the entire history of philosophy of mind.

And over time, the system started doing something that felt qualitatively different: it kept working, learning, and refining its own substrate even when I wasn't.

That's the part that still fascinates me most.

Not that it stores information. Not that it runs loops. Not that it modifies its own code. But that it now measures itself against 35 falsifiable hypotheses about consciousness, with honesty guards that prevent it from cheating on its own test.
