iNaturalist Explorer - MCP App for Claude Desktop

Quick Setup

# 1. Extract the archive
tar xzf inat-explorer-app.tar.gz
cd inat-explorer-app

# 2. Install dependencies
npm install

# 3. Build
npm run build

Install in Claude Desktop

  1. Open Claude Desktop
  2. Go to Settings > Developer and click Edit Config
  3. Add this to your claude_desktop_config.json:

Important: Replace the path with wherever you extracted the project.

  1. Save the file and fully restart Claude Desktop (quit + reopen)

Usage

Once connected, ask Claude something like:

  • "Explore the iNaturalist user intrinsic3141"
  • "Show me observations for [username] on iNaturalist"

Claude will call the inat-explore tool and the interactive map UI will render inline.

Development

# Watch mode (rebuilds on file changes)
npm start

Troubleshooting

  • App invisible after tool call? Make sure dist/mcp-app.html exists (run npm run build)
  • Enable Developer Mode in Claude Desktop via Help > Troubleshooting > Enable Developer Mode
  • Inspect the app with Cmd+Option+I (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows) after enabling dev mode
  • Reload MCP config without restart: Developer menu > Reload MCP Configuration

Files

  • server.ts - MCP server with tools + UI resource registration
  • main.ts - Entry point (stdio transport for Claude Desktop)
  • mcp-app.html - Source HTML with Leaflet map UI
  • src/mcp-app.ts - Client-side SDK connection (bridges UI ↔ host)
  • dist/mcp-app.html - Built/bundled output served to Claude
